Titanborn (Children of Titan, Book 1) by Rhett C. Bruno
A great quick and pleasant read, but...
Titanborn is flawed for the same reason it excels. It's essentially an FBI terrorist thriller in a sci-fi setting (this is where it excels). Books like this prove that science fiction is more than just the tropes surrounding it, but can function as a setting for any type of story. Much like FBI thrillers, it has great pacing, great characters, great build-up, and all around great execution. No doubt a great book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The problem is, just like FBI thrillers, it is also very predictable and stereotypical. Main character has an estranged relationship with his child; a jaded veteran officer gets partnered with a fresh gung-ho rookie; and a twist ending you can see coming a mile away. You've read one cop thriller, you've read them all.
But the setting is what sets Titanborn apart. You don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy it. If anything, I think this book is better suited for fans of more traditional FBI/cop thrillers who are looking for a fresh take on the genre.
