Crossover (Cassandra Kresnov, Book 1) by Joel Shepherd

Science fiction is probably the most misleading genre there is. You really have no idea what type of sci-fi you’re getting, regardless of any synopsis.

Now this book isn’t necessarily bad, but I was however expecting it to be a lot more badass than it was. While the action sequences are great, they’re few and far between. And during that between time, there’s a lot of focus on sex... like, A LOT... for no reason. It actually got a little annoying.

The first half is great, jumping in on Cassandra right as she’s going through some pretty traumatic stuff. The interrogation scene was oddly compelling in the best way possible. Then following it up with her fighting off an attack and gaining the approval of some would-be enemies (cliche, I know), but she quickly becomes a wildly interesting character.

But that seems to die off in the second half as Cassandra turns into a somewhat boring two dimensional character. Part of that was probably the excessive focus on her just trying to have sex with as many people as possible, but I really just kind of stopped caring about her.

I’ve decided I AM going to continue the series, because I see the potential it being badass, and this book really does excel at the things it got right. I’m just going to hope that the sequels focus on more important things.
